Disneyland Roma

The trial of the Romanian Roma (and a few others) who picked the pockets of tourists in the Disneyland near Paris (and apparently made 1 Mio EUR) is in full swing. According to the journalist, it is worthy of a Kusturica movie.
The article is good with one exception – the use of “clan” in this context. One family is definitively not a clan – and this term is abused in the European Press in the context of Roma.

A report on pickpockets in Paris’ Disneyland seen through the eyes of Romanians. Quote: “Seven women and five men, most of whom are Roma people from Romania who were sending their children to steal from tourists’ pockets in the Disneyland Paris” This is rather amusing, as it seems that there are also non-Roma who are sending their children to steal …
Anyway, theft is not an ethnic characteristic.

Festival of another Kind

On the 16th of August, in the Banská Bystrica Historic Town Hall, the largest Roma multi-ethnic event in Central Slovakia will be opened. It is called “Ľudia z rodu Rómov” [People of the Roma family] and will last until the 19th of August. A non-traditional home-based exhibition focusses on Roma women and their position in society in connection with the growing extremism and radicalism is part of the festival.

“The individual activities of the festival will be held in three cities – Banská Bystrica, Zvolen, Sliac and visitors can enjoy outstanding Roma artists from Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Romania,” said Denisa Sciranková from Quo Vadis civic association.

A conservative Fox News journalist – Tucker Carlson – went totally overboard on his show on the topic of the 40 Romanian Roma immigrants in Pennsylvania. He used comments of the type “”Gypsies” are settled in a small Pennsylvania town… and locals complain of them going to toilet in the street and beheading chickens” and worse ones. In brief, the went into a racist rant.

Rome – An Office for the Closure of Camps …

The mayor of Rome, Virgina Raggi, has set up an office whose aim is to monitor and ensure the closure of the Roma camps – long a promise she made during her election. Several Roma associations are waiting to see what is happening.
According to a recent briefing by the Association July 21, “in the face of a constant presence of Roma in informal settlements in Rome quantified in the last five years at around 2,200 / 2,500 housing units, in the last few months the estimate sank to no more than one thousand units. This decline is explained by less arrivals from other countries (Romania), from transfers to other European countries (Spain, France and Germany) and largely from the transition from informal settlements to old unused industrial facilities. In a city with about 2.9 million inhabitants, Roma people in informal settlements account for only 0.03% of the Roma population.”

Totally Wrong …

A Slovak article got their history totally wrong: Stating that until the 19th century Roma in the Austro-Hungarian Empire were mostly nomadic.
No, All Carpathian Roma were not. There were the Kale / Sinti in the Czech Republic and, after the abolition of slavery in Romanian lands the Vlax Roma, but by and large, the nomadism is a myth that Maria Theresia took from her German background.

Romania, Kitsch, and Rroma

A new museum opened in Bucharest. It is a museum of kitsch. And a section thereof is devoted to Rroma kitsch – as stated in the article “A section on Roma, or Gypsies, regurgitates stereotypes. A pregnant Gypsy woman stands next to a model baby lying on the ground and a metal bucket full of sunflower seeds, the image of a poor Roma woman. In another corner, there are photos of ornate houses with turrets which are labelled “Gypsy Architecture,” a style of house favoured by some well-off Roma.”
Well in this case it is not only kitsch but also stereotypes.

Romania and the Holocaust

72 years after the end of World War Two, Romania has still not come to terms with its past regarding the Holocaust. Romania, an ally of Germany, deported many Rroma to Transnistria where many of them died of hunger and diseases.
While on paper, a law was enacted for the survivors of the holocaust, granting them a small pension, most Rroma do not receive it – for lack of papers, but basically out of discrimination.

An American View on Rroma …

A fairly activist view of Rroma – with quite a few historical inaccuracies (slavery and serfdom for Rroma was only in Romanian lands, etc.).
What is bad in such representations is that it stereotypes Rroma just as victims and states “Colloquially referred to as “gypsies” for their supposed Egyptian heritage, the Roma are a heterogeneous ethnic group without a single common language, religion, or cultural tradition”. This is totally inaccurate – as there is a single common language and traditions, and only religion is different, taking the religion of the region in which they settled.
