Serbia: Interview with Osman Balić

Published by:

The president of YUROM from Nis, Osman Balić, is commenting on issues faced by Roma. His view is that the two biggest problems for Roma are on the one hand Roma themselves to the point where we do not need enemies and that the other main issue is growing neo-Fascism, which somehow found a home in Eastern Europe, and now even in the West. These are the two ends of the Roma problem according to him. In between there are many tiny problems, but they are negligible in comparison with these two issues.

Serbia: Another Attack

Published by:

A new attack against the Roma neighbourhood of Vidikovac in Belgrade. This is the fourth attack. This time a group of 15 men lead by an investor who is trying to grab the land on which the Roma live smashed a door of one of the barracks and, according to some, even the roof.
Bad, especially since the police doesn’t care.

Serbia: Spot the Issue?

Published by:

Do you spot the issue? Two parties in schoolyards in Serbia. In the first scantily clad go-go dancers, in the second, a Roma wedding.
Against which were protests logged? Clearly against the “depravation” of a Gypsy Wedding.

Ramush Harradinaj …

Published by:

The former prime minister of Kosovo and ex Leader of the UCK, Ramush Harradinaj has been arrested in France on a Serbian warrant. Harradinaj is being sought for crimes against Serbs, Rroma, and other minorities in Kosovo during the Kosovo war. This resulted in an outrage in Kosovo, but fact is, Kosovo was ethnically cleansed under his rule, and very thoroughly so, with only 10% of the Rroma remaining.
Nothing could ever be proven against him, but many witnesses were pressured and intimidated if not simply vanished (we know such cases).

German Dictionary and Ustasha

The Duden is at the centre of a controversy regarding the Ustasha. In its latest definition, they say “Croatian Nationalist movement who fought against Serbian centralism”. This prompted a backlash in the Web, as the Ustasha are definitively Nazis who killed all Rroma in Croatia (yes) and nearly all the Jews there.

Rroma Women and the Balkans

Published by:

Rroma Women and the Balkans

An article on Rroma women in the Balkans. Starts quite badly, as the picture in the headlines depicts a woman prostitute and drug addict in Serbia – we reported on this article a while ago. Then it gets worse … “The Roma identity generally refers to a traditionally nomadic ethnic group, with various linguistic dialects and many sub-groups, living mostly in Europe” Full stereotypes. 99.9% of Rroma, especially in the Balkan were always sedentary (except for their migration from India, but then what to say about Germans J). While the article is right about the discrimination, it is also wrong on the generalisation (and on the numbers). It also presents sex trafficking and exploitation as Rroma issues which it is not, it is a poverty issue. On the other hand (and not in the Balkans, it presents the sterilisation issue in the Czech Republic, and other facts that are quite correct.

The Result: LOTS OF STEREOTYPES, a few facts, and lots of generalisations.

Education in Serbia

Published by:

Education in Serbia

Some interesting numbers in Serbia and on education. The census counted 147’000 Rroma in Serbia, or rather, 147’000 people declared themselves or were rated as such in the survey. This represents 2.1% of the population in Serbia. Generally, one counts that there are about 10% of Rroma in that country. A bit more.

The ones who were registered have a bleak future with very low education (only one in a thousand will make it to university).

Bleak but not the full picture.
