The French news this week were overwhelmingly reporting about the issues in Italy where riots erupted after a Roma family was allocated a flat in a social housing. Many articles in the catholic French press on the pope and his intervention, but also about the overall situation of Roma. And otherwise, the beginning of the Ramadan for Moslem Roma and only two news on camps, one in the North, in Wattrelos, and in Grenoble.

More news this week in France. To start, reportage on a camp in a hole in Marseille and the plight of its inhabitants. A similar article on the situation of Roma in Nantes. In Toulouse, a camp of Roma, with many Albanians, was closed. In Montpellier, three policemen are wounded as they tried to stop a car entering a Roma camp. Near Paris, a clean-up on the site of a former camp, and a camp closure in Vigneux sur Seine. Finally, an appeal by many organisations to find permanent solutions to the shantytowns in France.
Last but not least, the story of a mayor from the North of France who made racist comments against Roma and who is now using the taxes from his town to pay for his legal costs …

Almost no news this week in France on Roma. Most notable case, the story of the “Gypsy Boxer”, one of the yellow vests protesters who was caught beating up a policeman, who went from “Gitan” as a nickname on the ring to a Rom in the press…
Other than that, protests in Savoy against a planned camp; families who were expulsed recently in Grenoble still have not been given housing; and a insertion village in the North was closed.

Not much this week in the French Press on Roma. An article in Libération investigates the views of the French state on Roma – albeit using itself derogatory terminology. In the North of France, a mayor who made derogatory comments on Roma in 2013 has problems with the justice, and his town is paying for it (yes!). Not much this week in France on Roma. A video on their history and origins is probably one of the better ones to circulate in that country, except when they divide Roma into three groups (Sinti/Manouches; Kale; Roma), and that their maps of distributions misses quite a few regions. Oh well, France seems oblivious of history when it comes to Roma.
Other than that, in the North, an article about an integration centre; a new squat in Angers, in Western France; and a protest in Juvigny, in the Alps, about a planned Roma camp.

Not many news in France on Roma this week. An article in Libération is somewhat disturbing. While it is called “No one has Roma friends, I asked myself why”, it nevertheless perpetuates clichés which is what the French press is doing all the time. Other than that, the usual news. In Western France, Roma children need to go to school; the site of a former camp was cleaned up in Nantes; near Paris, a squat was damaged by fire; and in the North, several housing projects, also targeted at Roma will be funded.

Seems that most of the news is centred around Nantes in Western France this week: Reflections on the camps and what to do with them, a camp that is threatened, and a clean-up that has not yet been done. In Lilles, there is no will to actually resolve the issue of the Roma camps. Near Paris, a camp has been burning while another was abandoned before an announced closure. In Montpellier, a camp that was not yet closed makes the headlines, while in Eastern France, the press warns against a “false” accident con trick that involves Roma.

First, two occasions to see the documentary “8 Avenue Lenine” in Paris. Not to be missed.
Then, the usual litany: Annecy pondering whether to close a camp or first find a decent lodging for its residents (really????); in Grenoble, 15 families are threatened with expulsion; and in the Vosges, a family is expulsed, and alternate lodgement is refused (which is illegal in France).

And finally, near Grenoble, a piece of land has been requisitioned to lodge (?) Roma.

Very few news on Roma this week in France. Probably due to a more animated political scene in the country at this stage.
First, a video on Roma and their history – no comments on the history ! – showing all these news in France are about less than 16’000 people! In Grenoble, people went to court over the right for lodging while in Fontaine, near Grenoble, as well as in Annecy, two Roma camps are threatened with closure. Finally, in the North, in Lille, people living in camps will be given cheaper passes on public transports.
