The news of a camp in the Vorarlberg in Austria is slowly making it to the headlines, even though this is old news by now. It shows how the press works.
The case of the blonde Gypsy girl made the headlines a while back and resulted in a flurry of negative articles on Rroma overall – they steal children, use them for criminal purposes etc… Well, in the main case cited, the blond Gypsy girl in Greece, the parents were cleared by the law. So the press did not report on crime but rather just spread stereoptypes.
A polish and Rroma community group in the UK… Would unfortunately no longer happen in Poland.
The documentary on Rroma children – Spartacus et Cassandra” is again on the headlines.
A French school teacher has received a price for her work with Rroma children in France.

Fleur Pellerin, France’s Culture minister wants to curb racism in the French Press, by potentially capping the state helps to the press in case of obvious bias against minorities. One of the key target is the paper “Valleurs Actuelles” who poublished a cover called “Rroma – the Overdose” a while back.

A camp of Rroma was closed in the Austrian Vorarlberg. Rightly so, the press says that the issue is far from closed. But the article itself contains quite a few stereotypes and statements.

The only thing he shows is how prejudiced he is read yourself … Rroma cannot be integrated in the workforce, Rroma should be sent back …
Flamenco is being used for staging flashmobs in Spain and is seen as a way to reconnect to the Rroma roots of the participants. Bravo!

Eric Zemmour, was finally condemned to a fine of 10’000 Euro for his comments on Arabs and Rroma. The stated that: “Les Normands, les Huns, les Arabes, les grandes invasions d’après la chute de Rome sont désormais remplacés par les bandes de Tchétchènes, de Roms, de Kosovars, de Maghrébins, d’Africains qui dévalisent, violentent ou dépouillent” – the Normans, Huns, Arabs, the great invasions after the fall of Rome are now replaced by bands of Chechens, Rroma, Kosovars, Maghrebians, Africans, who steal, rob, and rape.

A new Rroma TV will start broadcasting in Turkey on November 20th, aiming at changing the perceptions of the general population against Rroma. Good and necessary, as these are really bad in Turkey.
Our usual summary of what is going on in France regarding Rroma… In the North, the mayor of Wissous orders the closure of the Rroma camp; a squat where Rroma lived was closed in Bordeaux; in Creteil, Rroma living in the old buildings of the cemetarry’s undertaker have to leave; in the South, a mayor states that “not only Rroma are engaged in uncivil activities”; in Amiens, one of three escaped criminals (two Moldavians and a Rromanian) surrendered – and a commentary states “all the roads lead to Rroma” – even though nothing in the article states they are Rroma; garbage was removed from the site of a Rroma camp near Paris; in Lyon, discussions are ongoing about lodging homeless and Rroma; and finally a fire in a Rroma camps that only provoked several articles as it closed a major highway near Paris.
The movie on Rroma slavery in Romania still makes the headlines. Good!
A new campaign by Spain’s Roma Foudnation highlights a girls who wants to be a doctor. Unfortunately, the article highlights stereotypes stating that “6 out of 10” Rroma children do not complete their mandatory education … Well, would be good if they knew how many Rroma they are. 6 out of how many ???
Romanian Rroma migrants were camping in the Western part of Austria, close to the Swiss border. The authorities closed the camps and lodged the people, but went as far a suggesting of removing the children from the families … Bad memories …
Protests against the closure and evacuation of roughly 100 people from a camp in Malmö are continuing. Clearly, as in France, the eviction took place, but no solution to the problem were provided …
