Or should we say “Gypsies” … The Suburra series on the mafia has a Rom protagonist. Not really good as such. Subtitles in English call him a Gypsy in addition.

An act at the memory of the Roma killed in Dubnica nad Váhom as part of the Ma bisteren project which aims to remind people about the victims of the Roma Holocaust. In 1942-1944 a work unit was established in Dubnica nad Váhom, where Romani men were interned. In November 1944,
a “rehabilitation camp for Gypsies” was set up by the Ministry of National Defense. In essence, it was a concentration camp from which transports were planned to the extermination concentration camps abroad. More than 700 Romani men, women and children were concentrated during the month. On February 23, 1945, under the pretext of transportation to the hospital, they were loaded with a truck and taken to a local garrison where they brutally assassinated them.
May they rest in peace.

A Jubilee World Roma Congress will be taking place in London next summer [1-5 August]. For the first time it will be possible for all members of our communities (over 16) to vote electronically in the elections in connection with this Congress, and whosoever wishes to stand as Candidates. Democratic Transition will bring greater legitimacy and accountability and a democratic process allowing all to participate and work together for better recognition of the Roma Nation and the defeat of “anti-Gypsy” racism.

Seems that the Frankfort authorities are trying to get rid of homeless Roma beggars. The story recently with a stamp in the passport and the comments “aggressive begging” written in the passport are apparently the tip of the iceberg.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame

The controversy that followed casting a white student in the role of Esmeralda in the play based on Victor Hugo’s novel on the Hunchback of Notre Dame has made it to the front page of major newspapers in the US. Several students of the high school which scheduled the play managed to have it cancelled, saying that casting a “white” student in the role of a Romni was racist or at least cultural appropriation. Reactions against them were really bad and of course, Breitbart also pitched in.
What does it have to do with Roma: Well, actually not much, as the only thing that links Roma to this controversy is the fact that they are depicted in a play … Let’s hope that they are not the un-intended victims of this controversy.
