Less evictions in France, due to the winter pause, but lots of activities regarding Roma. Discussions on Roma in Marseilles, where politicians of various sides violently disagreed; in Nimes, Roma and unemployment are the greatest worries; in Celleneuve, a suburb of Montpellier, residents managed to force a debate on a Roma camp; in Nantes, in the West, Roima are being integrated, which is good; and in Grenoble, in the Alps, an evening was devoted to reducing stereotypes on Roma. Finally, near Paris, a camp was closed.

The European Union Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA) in a report and survey stated that minorities and migrants are facing increased discrimination and racism. The agency surveyed 25’500 people belonging to minorities in their survey.

Germany – A Bavarian Treaty?

Theatre Project

A German Theatre project called “Schuchten – Neue Nachbarn” [canyon – new neighbours] is being nominated for the Amadeu Antonio Price. This price is awarded to projects fighting racism. The play consists of Roma and Sinti telling stories while walking through a neighbourhood of Augsburg where many of them live.

The Jenische Organisation “Radgenossenschaft der Landstrasse” wrote to the Swiss Federal Council, deploring the increase of racism against travellers in the country, the closure of camping sites, and the inaction of the authorities. They deplore the fact that the Jenische are thrown into the same pot as other “foreign” and mostly Roma group and that politics at the same time plays one group against the other.

Slovakia: Education or Business

It seems that some schools in Slovakia are considering Roma children as a business rather than as pupils who need to be taught. In brief, the staff selected children, apparently overwhelmingly Roma, diagnosing them with various health disabilities, which resulted in their subsequent inclusion in a group of pupils with special educational needs where the school could receive more than twice the amount of money than for standard pupils.
Slovakia has a long story of putting Roma children in classes for mentally disabled people – before basically as racism, now for profit…

France: Murder and Beggars

Three Bulgarian Roma have been condemned to heavy prison sentences for the murder of another Rom in the North of France. According to the police, the fight arose over the control of the “lucrative” begging in the region.
This is bad, first because begging has never really been a criminal activity, much less a lucrative one. So here, the stereotypes of the Roma begging criminal rings is in full swing.

In Paris, the camp on the tracks of the petite ceinture train will be close (once again), dislodging several hundred people; in the Suburbs, in Villeneuve St. Georges, a clean-up and an anti-racism action; in Marseille, still no respite, with one evacuation in La Parette and in la Pauline, all the while with the church stating they would like to see a decent solution to the issues with Roma; in Bordeaux, the city wants to integrate Roma; in the North, probably for lack of Roma the travellers do the headline; and finally, an article about the winter respite that should already be in place in France.

Sofia and Horse Carriages
