Another series of pictures which, aside from their esthetical aspect, perpetuates the usual stereotypes about Rroma. How about making a series of pictures on French exclusively showing poor drunken French homeless?
In spite of some positive coverage due to the international Rroma day, this week’s French chronicle is not particularly nice. First, an intervention of the police in a Rroma camp near the prison of Loos in the North of France, an attempt to remove the Rroma from this camp; in the North, two families are expulsed; toilets are awaited in a camp near la Rochelle in the West of France; a new camping spot for travelers is installed near Paris in the bois de Vioncennes; near Paris, the arrival of Rroma is problematic; the Seine’s banks are being cleaned near a former Rroma camp; and news about a gang of thieves who stole tools near Dijon.
On a more positive note, a French Radio broadcasted for a day from a Rroma ghetto in Paris; and a positive action in the North of France!

A reportage from the Swiss television on a Rroma beggar. Nice in itself, i.e. in the portrait of that particular person, bad in that it reinforces the stereotypes – All Rroma are poor and are beggars.

A report of a project and school in Cologne – Amaro Kher [Our House]. This school prepares young Rroma and Sinti to the regular school where, unfortunately they are often victims of prejudices and stereotypes.
This week, French news are not dominated by the closure of camps or petty criminality … Main news are the fight against discrimination and racism. This is much better!
News on an exhibition in Roubaix, in the North on racism; “living books” aka story tellers in Lille; 200 people manifesting against the expulsions in Lille; and a portrait of an activist in Marseilles.
Expulsions are also in the press: Near Paris where 600 people were expulsed; and in the North where a camp awaits the verdict of the courts on its eviction.
Then, there is crime … With the collaboration of the French and Romanian police (bad, as the latter are really racist); and with arrests for theft among Rroma.

The city of Marburg in Germany remembered deported Sinti. The city’s mayor also expressed regrets at the current discrimination levels against Sinti and Rroma in Germany.
An outrageous article in the British Sun tabloid (and also in the Express). Shows the low level of journalism, all the prejudices and stereotypes. It is also clearly serving a political purpose, namely EU exit… So by depicting Rroma as thieves and raiding social security one drives people towards Brexit …
SHAME and BAD!
A story of Rroma “selling” their daughter to another family in Spain. In fact, a tradition of arranged marriages found among Vlax (originally Romanian Rroma) dating back to slavery. You had to pay the owner of the girl to have her go with the husbands family.
BAD … Usual stereotypes without any thoughts.
Two articles on Racism in Germany and on the fact that Rroma are the losers of this debate – unfortunately.
The international day against Racism was at least celebrated in some countries … Not in all, by far judging by the news coverage.
Several organisations have expressed regrets that Rroma are being ignored in the official Lithuanian history.

Two waitresses from Turku in Finland were fined 3’000 Euros for discrimination against Rroma – the waitresses had asked the Rroma to pay in advance…

Better late than never …
Amnesty International reported discrimination, racism and abuses in the Czech Republic against Rroma. The Czech education ministry who was stated a violating the children human’s rights filed a complaint with the police. The Czech prosecutor found no reason to push for an indictment but nevertheless slammed the report …

The story of the Rroma musicians from Kosovo fighting discrimination is doing the rounds! Good and a good reminder that Rroma were ethnically cleansed away from Kosovo.
