An article in the Serbian press about the first Conference dedicated to the development of media strategy, critical approach and improvement of the position of journalists dealing with issues of the Roma community in Europe which was held in Murska Sobota, Slovenia May 20-22.

One of the key problems faced by Roma in media across Europe is the lack of young Roma who want to engage in journalism. According to the article, Serbia is leading the way with many young Roma engaged in Journalism.

The main theme was the discussion about how important the Roma media are for the Roma community and how to deepen cooperation between them throughout Europe.

The young pianist Orsolya Lázoková, a Romni from Tornale, Slovakia, where she works as a television presenter at Madrom TV. She is a graduate of the Private Music and Drama Conservatory in R. Sobota and is currently continuing her piano studies in Banská Štiavnica. She enjoys her work as a presenter and editor and gathers new experiences.

Czech TV and Racism

Jakub Prachař, a Czech TV moderator, made fun of Roma during the show Česko Slovensko má talent (Czecho Slovakia has talent). The Romano rapper Rytmus in the show loudly declared in Romany “Xas mro kar”.

The Roma show So vakeres (What are you talking about?) is broadcasted twice a month and is created by Roma journalists. It provides an opportunity to preserve Roma culture and present it to those who do not yet know it. Their creators hope and wish that these shows would also help to reduce prejudice against the Roma.

A new magazine has been launched in the Czech Republic: Romano vod’i. In this first edition, an article on Jan Cibula, first Rom medical doctor and one of the original founders of the International Romani Union, Jan Ort, a Rom and activist, and Lucie Fuková, a Roma representative.

Roma are mostly presented negatively in the media, they still face discrimination! This follows from a survey by Romea. Respondents to the survey had the opportunity to choose Roma personalities, who were then invited by the first Roma internet television to the Desetiminutovka Plus program. “Some mentioned specific names, others just fields from which Roma should be invited to our program. Some of the names of Romany personalities that appeared in the poll, we have already had as guests on the show.
