Population Census

The article discusses the ongoing debate regarding the accurate population count of the Roma community in Hungary, highlighting discrepancies between census data and researchers’ estimates due to factors like identity and assimilation.

According to the latest census, about 210,000 people identified as Roma, (a 30% dreacres relative to the previous Hungar4ian Census) but estimates suggest the actual number could range from 500,000 to 1 million, with projections indicating a significant increase by 2050.

The Roma population is characterized by a young demographic structure, with higher birth rates compared to the general population, raising questions about future coexistence and integration with Hungarian society.

This latter statement is again unsubstanciated. It is assuming that all Roma have many children, whereas the majority is not. Many children is related to poverty, not to being Roma.

Roma Minority in Slovakia

Roma Minority in Slovakia

Roma have been in Slovakia since the 14th century. The first written document about the Roma population in Slovakia is a document from 1322, in which the presence of Roma in Spiš is mentioned by the Spišské novoveske mayor Ján Kunch. Later, larger groups of Roma arrived in Slovakia. In 1423, Sigismund of Luxembourg issued a document at Spiš Castle that guaranteed the Roma certain guarantees of protection and self-governing judicial powers.

The difference in number of Roma in the 2021 census and the number of Roma residents in the latest Atlas of Roma Communities from 2019 is almost threefold. While the 2019 atlas indicates that at least 417,535 Roma people live in Slovakia, in the 2021 census, only 156,164 Roma people declared themselves Roma.

Hungarian Census

Another article on the recent Hungarian Census. The overall population decreased by 3.4%, and, more astonishingly, the number of Roma passed from 300’000 to 200’000. All other “ethnic” minorities, Germans, Slovaks, etc. also decreased but not by as much as in the case of Roma.

The 300’000 number was anyhow a fallacy, as the government itself acknowledges more than half a million. So simply, Roma did not declare themselves as such …

Hungarian Census 2022

The preliminary results of the Hungarian 2022 census have been published. One astonishing fact is that according to the census, the Roma population decreased by more than a third, passing from 315’000 in 2011 to 209’000 now.

These numbers are totally out of whack with reality, as the estimated number of Roma in Hungary lies between 600 and 800’000… According to the Hungarian press, the decrease is due to people not stating their ethnicity in the census.
