There are suspicions of vote buying in poor communities in the Czech Republic during the last election.

Two US articles on Lety and the fact that the Czech government will finally buy the pig farm on the site.
Unfortunately, both articles contain misleading information. That 1’300 Roma were sent to Auschwitz from there, that there were 10’000 Roma in the Czech Republic before the War etc. Fact is that many people who were shipped to Auschwitz were not registered, and that no one knows how many Roma there was in the Czech Republic before the war.
One thing though is sure: After the War, there were none left.

It seems that Roma are not planning to go and vote in the upcoming Czech elections. This is bad, especially since the country may move sharply to the populist right.

An appeal to Roma to go and vote to bar Tomio Okamura, a rightist Czech-Japanese entrepreneur from governing the country. He is definitively not pro-Roma.

The Czech justice dismissed several cases of Internet hate speech submitted by the Rome organisation in the Czech Republic.
Judge by yourself, but the statements are definitively racist.

According to a recently released statistic, there are 245’800 Roma in the Czech Republic. The region with the highest number was the one of Usti nad Labem, with 68’500.
These statistics are usually very unreliable as many Roma prefer not to declare themselves as such, resulting in an over-representation of Roma living in Ghettos and a lower overall number.

A Roma activist, Cenek Ruzicka, was awarded the Czech Artis Bohemiae Amicis prize for his efforts to remove the pig farm from the Lety concentration site.

The Roma museum will be in charge of the new memorial museum in the Hodonin Roma concentration camp.
The memorial was to be opened last August but the opening was deferred due to a controversy on who would be running it going forward.

The deputy minister Karel Novotny was disciplined for having stated that Roma are like jellyfish, being “a nuisance, good for nothing”.

Czech Deputy Industry and Trade Minister Karel Novotny has written on Facebook that the Roma are like jellyfish because they are “a nuisance, good for nothing.”
He should be fired immediately.

Following the decision by the Czech government to buy the pig farm located on the site of the Roma concentration camp of Lety, the contract could be signed as early as next month.
This would close the chapter of Lety, but certainly not of the Holocaust in the Czech Republic where Roma were almost totally annihilated – essentially by the Czech themselves.

200 people commemorated the victims of the Holocaust on the site of the Hodonin Roma concentration camp in the Czech Republic. The commemoration was attended by the Prime Minister.

The festival that took place in Zvolen, Banska Bistrica and in nearby towns is ending this week end. Yesterday, a gala concert with Roma musicians from various countries was held in Sliač with musicians from Russia, Hungary, Czech republic and Slovakia.

On the 16th of August, in the Banská Bystrica Historic Town Hall, the largest Roma multi-ethnic event in Central Slovakia will be opened. It is called “Ľudia z rodu Rómov” [People of the Roma family] and will last until the 19th of August. A non-traditional home-based exhibition focusses on Roma women and their position in society in connection with the growing extremism and radicalism is part of the festival.
“The individual activities of the festival will be held in three cities – Banská Bystrica, Zvolen, Sliac and visitors can enjoy outstanding Roma artists from Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Romania,” said Denisa Sciranková from Quo Vadis civic association.

The Roma flag was flown on several official buildings in the Czech Republic for the Roma Holocaust Remembrance Day on August 2nd.
