Germany – A Bavarian Treaty?

Forced Sterilisations

An exhibition on forced sterilisations in Koblenz, Germany. The Exhibition centres on the times of the Nazis in Germany but one should not forget that this practice was still common in the Czech and Slovak republic until very recently, and that countries like Switzerland (last know case 1992) or Sweden continued the practice way after World War Two.

The news in France were dominated by the evacuation of the camp on the petite ceinture railway in Paris. Other news included a fire in a camp in Ivry, near Paris, resulting in the evacuation of the entire camp; in that same city, other Roma were received by the authorities, as they are requesting access to housing (as mandated by French Law); a discussion on a project from Roma in the North was very much controversial; a cold snap in Western France; and finally an altercation between Roma and Albanians in Macon.

Frank Sinisi, an ex-Front National Politician was condemned in Grenoble to a two-month suspended prison sentence and to a 2’000 EUR fine for having suggested to use the Roma’s gold teeth to pay for their accommodation.

Wilhelm Leuschner, a German social democrat and union activist is known in Germany as an anti-fascist and resistant. What is less known is that, while interior minister of the State of Hessen, he introduced strict anti-Roma policies, including forced fingerprinting and registration of the Sinti and Roma in Hessen.
This information was later used to deport and kill them.

In some places, France seems to be starting to solve the issue of 20’000 people: In Montpellier, in the south, the largest shantytown will be closed in the spring and its inhabitants will be re-lodged in bungalows. In Ivry, near Paris, Roma are welcome (yes) and in Lille in the North, a mayor and the state are summoned in court for the illegal expulsion of a small camp of Roma. Finally, in Paris, the petite ceinture camp is awaiting its 4th closure.
Other than that, social news, not so good: Children victims of violence in their family in Besançon; general bad situation for children living in shantytowns; and minors’ pregnancies.

Theatre Project

A German Theatre project called “Schuchten – Neue Nachbarn” [canyon – new neighbours] is being nominated for the Amadeu Antonio Price. This price is awarded to projects fighting racism. The play consists of Roma and Sinti telling stories while walking through a neighbourhood of Augsburg where many of them live.
