Last week end, there was large program on Rroma in Lausanne, with Movies, Round Table, etc. under the title Kamau te das duma – I want to talk.
A polemic started in France because of a planned moive by a French humourist – Christian Clavier – called “Sivouplééé” – a play on the French “please” as pronounced by Romanian Rroma beggars. This movie shows a leftist intellectual who has to open his home to a family of Rroma. And of course, all stereotypes are present.
Toni Gatlif, the French Rroma movie maker simply finds this disgusting, and we share his point of view.

A young Rrom was brutally beaten in Bulgaria (and the beating was filmed) for having said to the man he was his equal… If this is not racism!

Interesting … News in Romanian about a series of cultural events on European Roma art. The whole thing taking place in Vienna, Austria. There will be film screenings, exhibitions, concerts, theatrical performances which will show the public a picture of what it means to be Roma and specifically a Rromni. A new theatre project “Hass” – [Hate] about the life of Rroma and Sinti in Germany, loosely based on the plot or themses a Matthieu Kassovitz movie of the same name will be shown on March 16th in Cologne, Germany.

A French Documentary movie entitled “Toto and his sisters” received the “grand prix” in the Anger Festival. It is unfortunate to say the least that it shows all stereotypes associated with Rroma without any analytical discourse: Rroma live in Ghettoes, deal with drugs, have lots of children (implied in this case), but without stating that this is not a Rroma thing, this is a poverty and social problem.
We are generally against those kind of documentaries, as they reinforce already strongly held stereotypes about us …

A new prime time movie showcases Sinti on prime time in Germany. We haven’t seen it, but the plot has a few of the standard stereotypes … Unfortunately.

The story of the dog is still doing the rounds. The police is now investigating (at last), and the press still reports on it. What is missed by all, are that the statements of the person who snatched the dog are deliberately generalising and racist … Not all Rroma drug their dogs or eat their cats. As least I don’t.

The movie is making waves! Good, but let’s remember this is Romania, and Romania only. Let’s not generalise on all Rroma.
The designer Mary Katrantzou in her latest show is inspired by Kusturica’s movie “The Time of the Gypsies”. Fine, but saying that it is a “film that demonstrates the traditional Romani culture” is WRONG AND FALSE.
It is a movie that depicts poor Rroma engaged in criminal activities. It is a film about being poor and outcast, not about cultural traits.
The movie on Romanian Rroma slavery, Aferim, on which we have already repeatedly reported is a potential oscar contender.

Officials from the Croatian city of Vukovar have been filmed singing a fascist Ustaša song. The Croatian fascist regime killed Jews and nearly all the Rroma in Croatia (yes, almost all!).
This is definitively not acceptable!
